New Year, New Focus

Happy New Year 2014

Ships in Kiel Harbor

It is a brand new year that lies ahead of us. And I’m sure you’re already tired of hearing New Year Resolutions or the Word of the Year stuff. (Yes, I do love the Word of the Year, and I have one, but there’s plenty on that out there.)

Today, I want to talk about something else.

This year is like a brand new journal. Imagine that it has 365 pages that you can fill. And you can fill them exactly with what you want to put in there.

Really?

What about things like my icky job, my horrible neighbors, my struggle with health or money? I can’t change those, and they will be part of my year, as well!

That is true. And yet, you can still choose what you want to write down in the journal. You can choose to write what made you feel bad and angry, or you can choose to write and keep what made you feel happy and alive.

This is what you choose when you pay attention to things in your life. Do you give your attention and your focus to what’s annoying – or do you decide to pay attention and enjoy what’s good?

Here and now, at the start of this brand new year, I want to help you to focus on what’s good. Because I am sure there are good things in your life, even if you haven’t really looked out for them until now. Pay attention to them – and watch how more of that enters your life.

Because that’s how it works. What you focus on grows.

Yes, it’s that easy.

And now let’s tap to help you to shift your attention.

Even though it’s so hard not to focus on those things that make me angry, sad or afraid, I’m okay the way I am, and I’m open to the possibility that there are more good things in my life than I’m aware of right now.

Even though I’m afraid to ignore the bad parts of my life, after all, I need to protect myself, I’m okay the way I am, and I’m allowing myself to pay attention to the good things, too.

Even though the whole idea of focusing on good stuff goes against everything I learned, I’m okay the way I am, and I now allow myself to shift my focus to the good even while staying safe.

And now I’d like you to post a comment about at least the three good things that happened to you today. It could be anything, big or small. Anything that made you smile or feel good.
