“I forgot how to ride a horse!”

Riding lesson

The other day, a woman came back to the stable where I take lessons, wanting to take up riding again after a year’s break for health reasons. And she had no problem at all getting her horse ready for the lesson. But she was fidgeting around near the box and looked very unhappy.

Since we had become friendly during the year before, I asked her what was wrong. And she blurted out: “I don’t know if I can still ride a horse! I’m so afraid I have forgotten everything!”

“I’m so stupid!”

Stupid!

Stupid!

I‘m so stupid!

People sometimes say this when they hear something they didn‘t know. It happened to me the other day when I was asked whether sequoias grow in Europe. I said they only do so in botanical gardens. And the reaction was: „I‘m so stupid!“

Which, of course, isn‘t true. Not knowing something says nothing about anyone’s IQ. But thinking they are stupid says a lot about their mindset.

And mindset is fundamental. Continue reading

Great Expectations?

Steam Engine

Steam Engine

Do you still remember your childhood dreams about what you would do as grown-up? Did they include being a stewardess, a superhero, a firefighter, an actor, a dancer or maybe an archaeologist? Or did you want to be an engineer and drive a train all over the country? Or anything else? I hope you’re smiling a little now.

Of course, then there were our parents and their suggestions for getting a “sensible job”. And that probably included going to college and then working for a law firm, or a big company, a bank, selling insurance or something along the lines. Continue reading

Tapping Away a Headache

Headache

Headache

Now, just to make one thing really clear here: I’m not an MD, and I cannot give medical advice. So if you have a persistent headache, please go and have a doctor look at you.

What I can do is teach you a holistic procedure that has helped me a lot with headaches. And I believe that EFT deals with the emotional side of pain. Migraines are very typical for stress and overwhelm. Tapping on the pain itself will reduce stress – and thus help you let go of the pain. But like I said, it’s not medical. Continue reading

The Calamity Set-point

That other shoe will drop

Where’s that other shoe?

Are you familiar with this unsettling feeling of impending doom which creeps in just as things are really rolling along well? Is it difficult for you to really relax and enjoy a lovely day because it’ll be over all too soon? After all, there must be a balance of good things and bad things, right?

We have a comfort spot when it comes to the distribution of good and bad. When things go well for a certain amount of time, this begins to feel dangerous to some people – they are waiting for the other shoe to drop. Waiting for the bad thing that will restore the balance. Continue reading

Do you Brush off Compliments?

Got a compliment?

Got a compliment?

How do you react to compliments and people saying thank you? Do you brush them off, telling people: “No biggie.”? Does it make you feel good to resist the draw of compliments?

That’s too bad.

Because you’re not only denying yourself some pleasure. In fact, you are pushing away good things in your life. You’re refusing to receive. Continue reading

The Thing about Forgiveness

Forgiveness

Forgiveness

You’re reading it everywhere, especially if you’re interested in personal growth: Forgiveness. Forgive everyone, everything, and most of all, yourself. That’s the fashion. That’s the order of the day.

The real truth is: It’s not that easy.

Yes, we can take a deep breath and call forgiveness, and try to feel good. However, every time you need to forgive someone, something bad and unpleasant has happened. And this experience causes anger, sadness and long standing grudges. That’s natural. These feelings are a sign someone didn’t treat you right. Continue reading

Letting go of Failure

Failure

Mistake!

Everyone makes mistakes. And some are trivial. Some we can laugh away, and some are simply forgotten over the years. However, some feel like a millstone around your neck – and those cost precious energy every day.

We have reasons to hang on to the shame of making a big mistake. Most of all, we hope that if we keep that feeling alive, we’ll never make that mistake again. Remembering this one or these couple of failures with deep pain and shame, will protect us. As long as we replay those minutes in our mind, we should be safe from a repetition. Continue reading

Anger

Anger

Do you have this strange inner fury? Are there times when you just want to scream at your kids, and can barely hold it in? Are your cursing your life regularly?

There is an underlying anger inside you, all day long. A sense of deep dissatisfaction. An urgency you can’t explain. Continue reading

EFT for the Criticism Shock

Shock

Shock

Let’s just imagine you’ve talked about a project of yours, a great idea, maybe even your business. Let’s also imagine that you’re full of passion, delight and happiness about your plans. And then the person you talked to stares at you and says: “That’ll never work. Not here. Not for you.”

(This actually happened to me.)

You feel like someone pulled the rug out from under your feet. Your heart aches, and you might even have a physical reaction: Maybe your hands shake, maybe you feel sick to your stomach. And you sense doubt rearing its ugly head in a big way. The joy and passion you felt just moments earlier are blown away. And you are devastated. Continue reading
